Authentication Services

Authenticate My Wine

Whether concerned about a single bottle of wine, or an entire cellar full of them, if you have made purchases recently or decades ago, we will help determine the authenticity of your investment.

Fine and rare wine markets are flooded with both old and rare, and recent release counterfeits. More counterfeits are being made and released, as well as returned and resold to new buyers by unscrupulous, uneducated or careless vendors all the time.

We are here to help you protect your investment, mitigate purchase risk, and help you attain remuneration if you have been sold counterfeits.

INSPECTION AND REPORTING

Bottle inspections follow The Chai Method™, Maureen Downey’s proprietary systematic inspection method employing state-of-the-art, forensic investigation and assessment techniques. Following inspection, gathered data is analyzed, information compared with our vast database resource, and any further research required is completed so that we can arrive at fully developed and supported professional opinion of authenticity. Findings are delivered in either Verbal or Formal formats.

Those seeking inspection for resale must state so from the beginning, so that the authentic bottles can be tagged, and Chai Vault certified. Only tagged, Chai Vault certified bottles may be marketed as having been authenticated by Maureen Downey and her team.

INSPECTION AND VERBAL REPORTING: AUTHENTIC AND INAUTHENTIC

Verbal Opinions are delivered either by phone or in person. No written report or communication with the findings is provided. Findings are confidential and may not be used for sales, marketing, or remuneration purposes.

Verbal Reporting is appropriate for:

  • Pre-purchase inspection to mitigate risk of bad purchases – Private Buyers Only.
  • Collectors wanting to have an initial sample of a larger collection vetted, prior to engaging our inspectors for a full cellar inspection.

Verbal reporting is not available to resellers and those looking to authenticate for sale.

INSPECTION AND FORMAL REPORTING

Professional opinions of findings with Formal Reporting are delivered in different formats based on the outcome of the authentication. Bottles deemed inauthentic have findings delivered in written reports, where authentic bottles are tagged and certified in the blockchain based Chai Vault.

Formal Reporting is appropriate for:

  • Those who have already purchased wine which may be counterfeit.
  • Collectors that want to have their bottles / collections certified on the blockchain based, Chai Vault, for insurance and increased resale value purposes.
  • Any reseller of wine. Verbal Reporting is not available to resellers.

Inauthentic Formal Reporting: Written Reports

In the unfortunate event of an inauthentic, inconsistent or blatantly counterfeit finding a detailed report is created including photographs and information to support the position. These reports can be, and often are, used for seeking remuneration for bad purchases.

We suggest victims of counterfeit sales seek current market value, not simply a refund of purchase value, as most vendors will happily take counterfeit bottles back at purchase price, so they can resell them again, making the additional increased value mark-up. You made the investment, you should not lose out on the return.

AUTHENTIC FORMAL REPORTING: CHAI VAULT INPUT

Bottles deemed authentic or consistent with known authentic examples and production standards, are certified in our groundbreaking, blockchain based, digital ledger—the Chai Vault. TCM™ inspection information, photographs and other data points are registered in a bottle’s individual blockchain ledger, creating a unique, digital thumbprint. Sales and provenance information can be added to strengthen the power of the information, which is visible online on the bottle’s Ledger of Authenticity and Provenance. This online ledger displays information including the authenticators name, date, location and the bottle’s condition at time of inspection, if it is part of a case or a standalone bottle, and importantly, all provenance information which can be supported with evidence about the bottles past.

For private collectors, we will deliver the data in a personalized listing of certified inventory ledgers, known as a Digital Cellar. Cases, or bottles coming from the same OWC are noted, and owners or cellar managers can add in location information, and any other online cellar management function information they need.

If ever a bottle is to be made available for sale, or its authenticity proven for insurance or estate needs, the bottle’s Ledger of Authenticity and Provenance can be made public by the owner, so that it can be accessed by potential buyers, vendors, or other interested parties. The URL to a bottle’s Ledgers of Authenticity and Provenance can be listed by a licensed selling vendor on their own website, or in a digital catalogue, – as a short URL or embedded in a Chai Vault symbol- to market the bottle’s authenticity and display provenance information with sensitive information encrypted to protect privacy. Bottle owners’ names and personal information, sales details with personal information on them and B-to-B transactions can be encrypted for privacy, however the name of the authenticator, date and location of the authentication, and names and dates of sales and vendors will remain unencrypted. As the bottle changes hands, provenance can be updated, thereby preserving, and increasing, the bottle’s value over time.

Wine-Searcher.com will also make the URL of certified bottle ledgers visible on searches to increase buyer awareness of the authenticity and provenance information of bottles – thus empowering consumers to make only sound, fact-based purchases.
